Scenes From Civic Life: Europe (and the world at large)
These are pictures that I’ve made while traveling at various times in Europe. I use Europe as a general classification for the different countries that I’ve had the good fortune to visit and photograph. But my themes and subject matter are not constrained by place: they are the quotidian, daily life, glimpses, aperçus. As in all my pictures that which is human is my subject material.
Europe has afforded me opportunities to explore history and traditions different from the culture in which I was raised. This is an awareness I bring to my European pictures, this sense of place and span of time. I’m also intrigued by the influence that the dominant American media-driven culture has brought to other cultures and the resulting give and take, tensions, paradoxes. The opportunity and privilege to explore and describe this subject matter, no matter where I am, is one I take with a great curiosity and sense of responsibility.
