Scenes From Civic Life: United States
These photographs of domestic and civic life in the United States are my attempts to characterize, understand and give form to the society and culture in which I live and have been raised. In these, as in all my photos, I explore our existence as social animals through our interactions, institutions and constructions. I search for the new in the familiar and, with good luck and timing, I give form and expression to “the glimpse” and see daily life differently, freshly.
My greatest challenge photographing that which I live with everyday is to get beyond my desensitization to the familiar, the commonplace; to make pictures that heighten my own understanding of my time and place and, as a visual bard, enable others to achieve their own equally valid awareness.
